“People Are Still People,
No Matter What”

In recent years, the manner in which people are described has changed, in this country. More care is being taken to be "politically correct" in reference to cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds. American Indians are now known as Native Americans. Those of Italian ancestry are now Italian Americans. However, does politically correct abolish prejudice? Does this put an end to stereotyping? Essentially, does this solve all of our problems?

The answer to these questions can be both yes and no. Yes, there is more care being used no be indiscriminate. But, there are still those with prejudicial attitudes that changing names cannot erase.

Changing the names does not necessarily protect the innocent. Changing the names is not a fool proof solution to the problem. The only change that will bring about a solution is a change in attitudes. This sort of change does not take place overnight. In fact, it will take longer than changing the names. But, this would be a far more worthwhile, productive change.

Labeling people, even done in a well intended and politically correct manner, is still labeling. The tone, taken by an individual, is what determines the absence or presence of prejudice. People are all the same, no matter what their origin or background. Once all people come to realize and accept this in their hearts and minds, then both tone and attitude will change. This is when all of humanity will come together in the true solution.
