“FREEDOM'S IRONY”
by Opal Elaine Moyer

One of the greatest provisions in the Constitution of the United States is freedom of speech and expression. No matter what an individual or groups point of view might be, all have the freedom to express it-even if it might undermine the very Constitution, that grants this right.

For example, hate groups are given the same freedom of speech and right to assembly as any other special interest group, so long as no violence toward others occurs. A few years ago, a hate group was planning a rally in a nearby small town. Though many of the local residents opposed this rally, it went on as scheduled because a ban would have been unconstitutional. This despite the fact that the aim of this group would be to take away the rights of others.

Freedom of speech and expression is a great gift. The bottom line is that freedom is for all, whether an opinion is embraced or opposed by others. So, for all to enjoy these freedoms, those who oppose freedom must enjoy these freedoms, too. This is where the irony lies. However, otherwise, freedom could become a hypocritical concept.
